You all know about the late afternoon shoulder-tap, right? It usually arrives after you have recovered from lunch, but before you can start getting ready to leave for the day. Your boss comes over to you, taps you on the shoulder, and says something like, “Gotta minute?”

    In the UK, it can be a little clearer why you find yourself out of work.

    Your job can be made redundant, and so there is no position for you. The company cannot recruit anyone else to that same position for a period of time (I think it's 6 months).

    You can be dismissed, involving a verbal, first written, and second written warning. The company must state the reasons for dismissal. You can also be dismissed on the spot for gross negligence.

    It gets a little vaguer if you have been working there for fewer than two years, as you have fewer employment rights in that period, or if you are on a fixed term contract.
